Phuket, building materials
Cladding with porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles is a key stage of renovation in Phuket. In conditions of high humidity, salty air, and scorching sun, an error in material selection leads to rapid deterioration of the finish. We will help you understand the difference between the two materials and advise which tile to choose for your villa, apartment, or hotel.
Both materials are ceramic coatings, but their production technology differs.
Ceramic Tile: Made from clay with glaze on the surface. Has higher water absorption (3-10%). Prone to wear of the glaze and is less impact-resistant.
Porcelain Tile: Pressed under high pressure, with pigment added to the mass. Has minimal water absorption (less than 0.5%), high hardness (8-9 on the MOHS scale), and absolute frost resistance.
The choice depends on load, humidity, and contact with the sea.
Living areas in condominiums and villas:
Bedroom, Living Room: Suitable quality ceramic tile in large format (60x60 cm) of wear resistance class PEI III. Choose a matte or textured surface for slip resistance.
Kitchen, Hallway: Porcelain tile of class PEI IV with low water absorption is essential. Formats imitating wood or stone are ideal.
Areas with extreme humidity:
Bathroom, Shower: Only porcelain tile with anti-slip relief (R10-R11). We recommend smaller formats for easy installation with the correct slope.
Area around a private pool, SPA: Use porcelain tile of technical classes (A, AA) with increased resistance to salt and chemicals. Colors: light tones (beige, gray) to prevent overheating in the sun.
Open spaces and facades:
Terraces, verandas, facades: Use frost-resistant (even in the tropics for contrast with air conditioning) and wear-resistant porcelain tile for outdoors in 30x30 or 60x60 cm format. A rough surface is important.
Sizes: For villas, large-format tiles (120x120, 60x120 cm) are popular to create a seamless space. For balconies and bathrooms — 30x30, 60x60 cm.
Colors and Design: Trending are imitations of natural marble, concrete, and wood in light, gray, and beige tones, which visually enlarge the space and heat up less.
Installation: For laying porcelain tile, special high-adhesion adhesive type C2 is used. This guarantees reliable bonding in heat and humidity.
